In 1909, artist Pamela Colman Smith, under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, created a tarot deck that would forever change the course of modern divination. The Rider–Waite–Smith tarot introduced fully illustrated Minor Arcana scenes — a radical departure from centuries of pip-style decks. This storytelling structure transformed tarot into an intuitive system that became the foundation for almost every deck published since.
